Mark Wubben eating soup at Pier 39, San Francisco

Hi there! My name’s Mark Wubben and I’m a European Dutchman of fine 1986 vintage. I’m a web hacker by trade, renown for my work on sIFR, which helps bring rich typography to the web. I’ve workd as a software engineer at Xopus, performing crazy DHTML wizardry in order to create a friendly XML editor. I’ve also worked for JotSpot in the summer months prior to their acquisition by Google.I’m currently living in Copenhagen, as a freelance web developer. See my resume.

I mentioned I’m a web hacker, which means as much as that I love building cool shit with web technologies. I’m an expert in building client-side web applications, but I’ve also done my share of server-side coding. I know my HTTP, believe REST to be the most elegant solution and prefer Atom over RSS, but only on technical merits. If I don’t know how to do something, I’ll learn it. Quickly. I see code as the understanding of a problem – and therefore a solution. I think about code and solutions in an abstract sense. I strive for beautiful code, but realize that perfect beauty can almost never be attained. Design patterns are the natural effect of not repeating yourself while writing beautiful code.

I love the web. I love it for its creative destruction, for bringing people together and empowering them. For unleashing a new generation of creative people no longer simply consuming but interacting and creating. I sincerely believe the web can dramatically change the world – for the better. I want to be a part of this change. I’m highly interested in the economics of value creation, in social structures and morals and change. I recognize that more technology often is not the right answer.

I believe the web is not just about computers, but about all kinds of interconnected devices. This leads to my interest in ambient devices and technologies. I’ve been playing with RFID as an additional, physical interface. I’d love to create more stuff with more technologies.

I like writing, but I don’t write enough. I’ve given a few presentations at conferences and companies, which I really enjoyed. Presenting is a skill I’d like to develop further, but even now I’ve been getting excellent responses.

I love people. Especially if they’re smart, passionate and creative. I believe in democracy, freedom and respect. I believe quibbles about our differences detract from our potential. When different people work together in an open-minded fashion, amazing things will happen. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, you’ll know what I mean.

Perhaps I can work with you?
